This rare solidus serves to legitimize the creeping usurpation of the rule of the senior emperor Constantine VII by the family of Romanus. Constantine inherited from his uncle Alexander, the first to use the coronation type. Romanus, a strategos of the army, married his daughter to Constantine and in short order became basileopator, caesar and joint emperor, finally naming his sons co-emperors. Christopher was the first, in May 921, and this solidus implies that his elevation comes through the heavenly blessings on the reign of Romanus, not through the technically senior emperor Constantine VII.

Lot # 605 - Constantine IX Monomachus (1042-1055 AD). AV Histamenon Nomisma, Constantinople mint. Obv. Facing bust of Christ Pantokrator, nimbate, raising hand in benediction and holding Gospels; crescents in nimbus. Rev. Rm. Facing bust of Constantine, wearing crown and loros, holding long cross and globus cruciger. D.O. 3; Sear 1830. AV. 4.36 g. 27.00 mm. Struck on a broad and unclipped flan, brilliant and superb. Rare as such. EF. Michael V had succeeded his uncle Michael IV as emperor. His first actions were to banish his uncle, John the Eunuch and to imprison the Empress Zoe in a nunnery. This led to the population’s demand for an ousting of the emperor and he was deposed, blinded and Zoe and Theodora ruled jointly for 7 weeks. Zoe then chose Constantinus as her third husband. He was interested in learning and the arts and less in statesmanship. In 1046 he had a first encounter with the Seljuk Turks in Armenia which resulted in a truce. Foolishly he then disbanded the Armenian forces at a time when they should have been strengthened. In 1054 the Great Schism between the churches of the West and East was caused when the Patriarch refused to adopt Western church practices. He was excommunicated by a Papal legation and he in turn excommunicated them. This rift was never to heal. In all, Constantinus IX did more damage to the state than many an emperor before him. Lot # 607 - Romanus IV, Diogenes (1068-1071). AV Histamenon Nomisma, Constantinople mint. Obv. The three sons of Constantine X and Eudocia, standing facing: Michael holding labarum and akakia, between Constantius and Andronicus, each holding globus cruciger and akakia; dotted exergual band. Rev. Christ standing facing on footstool, crowning Romanus and the empress Eudocia, each holding globus cruciger. D.O. 2; Sear 1861. AV. 4.33 g. 28.00 mm. Scarce. Full weight and unclipped flan. A choice example. VF/ Good VF. Eudocia ruled as regent from the death of her husband Constantine X in May of 1067 until the end of the year. At the time, the empire was facing a military crisis in the east as the Seljuq Turks advanced further into Asia Minor, and the prevailing feeling was that a competent military leader should be emperor. Eudocia, despite having declared that she would never remarry, took the hand of Romanus IV Diogenes on 1 January 1068. Romanus’ own rule lasted a little over two and a half years, as he was captured by the Turks at the Battle of Mantzikert in August of 1071. Eudocia was re-established as regent for two months before being coerced into retiring to a convent. (Triton XVIII, 1347 note).

The Virgin enthroned facing, holding the nimbate head of the infant Christ; throne back decorated with saltires and pellets. Rev. X/M/ΔΕC/ΠΟ/Τ - OΠ/ΛΛ/OΛ/[?]. Michael standing facing, being presented by St. Michael, who stands behind him, to Christ enthroned left, holding scroll. D.O. 1; Sear 2241; Lianta, LBC, -. AV. 25.00 g. Opus: 4.29. RRR. Extremely rare, fewer than ten known. Brilliant and lightly toned. About EF. This important piece heralds the transition between the rump empire at Nicaea and the glorious restitution of Palaeologan rule at Constantinople by Michael VIII. His gold issue struck at Magnesia before the reconquest survives in possibly only one example, SB 2238 with Christ enthroned / Michael crowned by Christ. This second type, with the victorious Michael kneeling and offering prayers to Christ, is likely an allusion to his successful campaign to oust the Crusaders from the ancient capital. His last and most common hyperpyron type shows the Virgin within the walls of the city. Grierson suggests that the three varieties of this Type II hyperpyron, with saltires, B|B or K|K on the throne back, were struck at both Magnesia and Constantinople as the Byzantine court transfered to its ancestral home. The last two varieties refer to Basileus basilewn kai Kurios kuriwn-'King of Kings and Lord of Lords,' a victory acclamation.

Secondo Grierson la moneta in questione deve essere stata coniata nel mese di novembre dell'anno 1198 in quanto Costanza morirà il giorno 27 dello stesso mese. Questo tarì dunque dovrebbe celebrare l'investitura dell'infante Federico a futuro sovrano del regno grazie al costoso (i documenti riferiscono un'appannaggio di 30000 scifati) affidamento da parte della madre a Papa Innocenzo III, che diverrà insieme ad altre personalità di spicco, suo precettore.

Interessante l'attribuzione di questa moneta ad Adriano VI da parte del Chimienti: 'E' molto improbabile che un pontefice ambizioso e nepotista come Leone X potesse accettare che sulle monete bolognesi non fosse presente il proprio stemma familiare. Invece ciò poteva essere accettato facilmente da Adriano VI [...] Pertanto è probabile che i ducati d'oro con il leone in luogo dello stemma papale e [...] senza lo stemma del cardinale legato Cybo siano da attribuire ad Adriano VI'.
