L TETAP-TOV Bareheaded, draped and cuirassed bust of Hermes right, wearing lotus on head, caduceus over shoulder. Dattari-Savio 8523 (this coin, + ill.). RPC IV. 4/262 (this coin). Geissen -. Milne -. Emmett -. Some pitting and minor roughness. Very attractive brown-reddish patina. Very Fine. Unpublished and of the highest rarity. Apparently the only specimen known. Ex Giovanni Dattari Collection, Il Cairo, 8523. Ex Sotheby’s 20.05.1982, lot 79. Probably a unique specimen of this Alexandrian drachm displaying a bust with a severe and solemn portrait of Antoninus Pius on the obverse, while on the reverse emerges the youthful bust of Hermes, of remarkable stylistic quality with the Greco-Egyptian attributes of the caduceus with terminal snakes and the lotus flower protruding in the center of the head. An excellent choice made at the time by Giovanni Dattari for his collection.
