Lot # 689 - Pius IX, Giovanni Maria Mastai Ferretti of Senigallia. Pope from 1846 to 1878. Escape of the Pope to Gaeta. Bronze medal of maximum module undated, but 1848-Year III. By Nicola Cerbara. (Bronze, 82.35 mm, 230.41 g). PIVS IX PONT MAX Bust left with zucchetto, mozzetta and stole adorned with The Pope Insignia, the Dove and grapes and plant spirals; below the bust, NIC CERBARA F; all within a wreath of laurel and oak leaves. Rev. Panoramic view of Gaeta from the Cappuccini hill; in the background, the port and the castle. With decorative convex ring in relief, inside the frame. Bartolotti 1971, 3. Bartolotti 1988, p. 352, SD-42/a. D'Auria 233 var. Ricciardi 199 var. Extremely Fine. Extremely rare medal, minted in very few specimens (this is the only specimen that has been auctioned off in recent decades). Ex Numismatica Ars Classica Milan auction 68, December 4, 2012, lot 283 (sold for Eur 3750). The medal was minted in Rome when Pius IX came back. It is probably the prototype of the medal struck in gold and distributed as a gift to the diplomats who helped and accompanied the Pope to Gaeta and contributed to his restoration to power in Rome. The minting of this medal with a decorative rounded ring in relief is probably due to the use of a pair of dies that Cerbara had kept for himself and which he used privately. Unfortunately it is impossible to establish their number. He probably used (but there is no supporting documentation) a Florentine establishment for these bronze private restrikes.

The works begun in 1847, ended in 1853 and the inauguration was carried out by the Pope on October 12, 1854. The bridge, destroyed on June 3, 1944 during the Second World War, was reconstructed in 1947. (See F. Bartolotti).

Lot # 701 - Pius IX, Giovanni Maria Mastai Ferretti of Senigallia. Pope from 1846 to 1878. The reconstruction of St. Paul Basilica. Silver medal of maximum module 1861 (Year IX). By Giuseppe Bianchi. Medal with sharp and accurate details. Nearly Uncirculated. Scarce. Ex Thesaurus auction 8, November 11, 2012, lot 1771. The medal was issued in 1861 when Giuseppe Bianchi had the "incidatur" for the minting of a new obverse, to replace the one created in 1852 by Cerbara, which had been in use for a decade. With the new obverse combined with the splendid reverse of the Basilica of St. Paul, which he had already engraved in 1854, Giuseppe Bianchi finally had a medal of his own. This extraordinary medal introduces us, with a fascinating perspective panorama, into the sumptuous and quiet beauty of the central nave. It seems incredible, but with a normal lens every detail appears: the mosaics of the apse and the triumphal arch, details of the ciborium and of the Confession, of capitals, of large windows, of the magnificent ceiling and even the portraits of the Popes lined up, on the side walls, above the colonnade (From F. Bartolotti).

Medal of maximum module minted in memory of the erection in Piazza di Spagna of the column dedicated to the B.V. Immaculate. The column had been found during excavations in Campo Marzio in 1777, but only 77 years later, with the decision of Pius IX to erect a sacred monument to the Virgin, in perennial memory of the dogma he defined as the Immaculate Conception (1854), it was decided to reuse it. The project for the monumental execution of the work was entrusted to the architect Luigi Poletti (see F. Bartolotti).
