Stunning Pyrrhos of Syracuse

Sicily. Syracuse. Pyrrhos (278-276 BC). AE 19 mm. Obv. Head of Athena left, wearing crested Corinthian helmet ornamented with a griffin; behind, owl standing right, head facing. Rev. Grain ear within oak wreath. HGC 2 -; CNS II p. 334, 188; SNG ANS -; Virzi 1829. AE. 5.48 g. 19.00 mm. RRR. This type has two main varieties: the common with the legend BAΣIΛEΩΣ ΠYPPOY on the reverse, and this extremely rare variety which lacks the legend. Possibly the third specimen known. Superb and boldly struck, with an enchanting glossy deep green patina. Good EF.
