Signed Arethousa


Sicily. Syracuse. Dionysios I (405-367 BC). AE Hemilitron. Obverse die signed by the artist E(umenes?), c. 405-400 BC. Obv. Head of Arethusa left, wearing necklace and earring, hair in sphendone, pattern of stars on sakkos and letters E Ǝ. Rev. ΣYPA. Wheel of four spokes, with dolphin in lower quarters. HGC 2 1479; CNS II 19 fr 1; SNG ANS -. 3.85 g. 17.00 mm. Superb example, signed by a gifted artist who engraved these dies in the finest classical style. Attractive glossy olive green patina. Minor flan crack only on obverse surface. EF.
