

Egypt. Alexandria. Marcus Aurelius, 161-180. Drachm (Bronze, 34.20 mm, 30.93 g) dated RY 5 (= 164-165) Laureate bust of Marcus Aurelius left. Rev. Personified Nilus bare chest seated left on rocks, wearing lotus wreath, holding cornucopia in the right hand, from which emerges genius crowning Nilus, and reed leaning to left on the left arm, crocodile resting on rocks to right; all around, a multitude of little genii playing, L Є (date) in exergue, under the ground line. This is probably the only known specimen of this drachm from Giovanni Dattari's collection, as noted by RPC IV.4 2756 who mentions and illustrates it. Note the laureate bust of Marcus Aurelius unusually facing left. On reverse a canonical, overwheight Nilus lying on top of a crocodile, being crowned by a genius protruding from the cornucopia.
