Egypt. Alexandria. Marcus Aurelius, 161-180. Tetradrachm (Billon, 26.3 mm, 12.99 g). Dated RY 3 (= 162/3). Μ ΑΥΡΗΛΙΟϹ ΑΝΤΩΝΙΝΟϹ ϹΕ Laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust left. Rev. MONH-TA Moneta standing facing, head left, holding scales and pertica (measuring rod); below the scales, two coin purses; Γ/L (date) to right. Geissen -. Dattari-Savio 3351 & 9164. Ex Münzhandlung Basel 6, 18.03.1936, lot 943. Marcus Aurelius Augustus (161-180 AD), with his own dating, the third year of reign (162-163 AD), after the accession to the throne, is here introduced by a tetradrachm absolutely rare, with imperial bust exceptionally turned left and seen from behind. On reverse the figure of Dikaiosyne-Moneta assimilated. A specimen of excellent quality and of large form, mentioned by RPC IV.4 2395 at number 5, dating back to the famous swiss collection of Dr. Hans Steger and put on auction sale on 18th March 1936 by Münzhandlung Basel belonging to brothers Herbert and Erich Cahn, successively founders and executives of the historical Münzen und Medaillen AG, in Basel, now extinguished. The catalogue of that auction was the first to be personally and masterfully edited by Herbert Cahn.
