Lot # 401
Egypt. Alexandria. Antoninus Pius, 138-161. Drachm (Bronze, 32.32 mm, 20.41 g). Dated RY 23 (= 159/60). ΤI ΑΙ ΑΔΡI [ΑΝΤΩΝΙΝΟC CЄΒ ЄΥ] Laureate head right. Rev. Agathodaemon serpent with head of Serapis riding horse to right; L [K]Γ across field. Dattari-Savio 2831. RPC IV.4, 2174. Emmett 1444. Geissen 1852. Rough surface, light deposits. Good Fine. Rare. Ex Naville Numismatics Ltd. 41, 24.06.2018, lot 264. On the drachm obverse one can see all the incipient senility in the portrait of Antoninus Pius in his last year of life and reign. On the reverse is the unusual composition of the serpent Agathodaemon with the head of Zeus Serapis, to whom it is sacred, standing on the back of a horse marching to the right. It is in any case a greeting image of the sovereign in the twilight of his princedom. All bathed in a brilliant original black patina.
