Lot # 393
Egypt. Alexandria. Antoninus Pius, 138-161. Drachm (Bronze, 31.53 mm, 22.31 g). Dated RY 11 (= 147/8). [ΑYΤ Κ Τ ΑΙΛ ΑΔΡ] ΑΝΤωΝΙ[ΝΟC CEB EYC] Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust right. Rev. Apollo Didymaios standing facing, holding a tiny stag in his right hand and a bow with his left; to left and right, the two Nemeses, both turned to face him, both raising a hand to point at her mouth, and the one on the left receiving the stag from Apollo; [L E]NΔEKΑΤΟY (date) in exergue. Dattari-Savio 8313. RPC IV.4, 1046.15 (this coin cited). Geissen 1573. BMC 1029-30. Emmett 1358. Very Fine. Rare. Ex CNG XXVII, 29. 09. 1993, lot 1365. The bust of Antoninus Pius on the obverse of the drachm is remarkably stylish. The reverse reproduces the image of the Milesian Apollon that we have already encountered in no. 108 of the collection, here portrayed standing facing between two Nemesis turned to him. Let us reformulate the hypothesis of an implicit symbolic alliance (Omonoia) between Alexandria and Miletus.
