Egypt. Alexandria. Hadrian, 117-138. Drachm (Bronze, 32.52 mm, 24.75 g) dated RY 19 (= 134-135) AYT KAIC TPAIAN AΔΡΙΑΝΟC CЄΒ Laureate head of Hadrian left. Rev. L ЄNNЄ AK Δ (date) around. Elpis draped standing left, raising her skirt with the left hand in apotropaic gesture and holding flower in the right hand. RPC III, 5988 (this coin, no. 17). Dattari-Savio Suppl. 75. Emmett 956. On obverse we see an attractive portrait of Hadrian, exceptionally turned left, a detail that makes the coin rather rare. On reverse there is Elpis, holding the lotus flower, the personification of Hope that according to Hesiod, is the last to stay in the Pandora's box when the evils that spread in the world, came out of it.
