Rev. Trajan driving quadriga of elephants to right, holding eagle-tipped scepter in his left hand and branch in his right; L K (date) in upper right field. Dattari-Savio 774. RPC III 4938.1. We encounter here a bronze drachm of exceptionally large form with centred and intact images and an original brown patina spread evenly over obverse and reverse, where the ‘invictus imperator’ is celebrated at the head of a quadriga of African elephants in his twentieth and final year of reign.
