Constantinople. Anonymous. Time of Nicephorus III Botaniates (c. 1078-1081). AE Follis. D/ IC-XC, bust of Christ facing, wearing nimbus cruciger, pallium and colobium, raising right hand in benediction, book of Gospels in left hand, all inside border of large pellets. R/ Latin cross with X at center, globule and two pellets at each extremity, floral ornament in either side of lower fields, crescents in either side of upper fields. Cf. Sear 1889; Cf. Schl. pl. I, 13 (Edessa). 3.73 g. 22.50 mm. This type undoubtedly represents a prototype for the Edessian coins issued by Latin Rulers. Schlumberger had recognized some types which bears ornamental or stylistic varieties which have been attributed to Edessa for the similarity with other issues. Good VF.
