MILNE, Joseph Grafton, The Alexandrian Coinage of Augustus, in "The Journal of Egyptian Archaeology", Vol. XIII, Parts III and IV, pp. 135-140 + Plate XXXI, London, 1927. Very Fine. Ex Naville Numismatics 49, 12.05.2019, lot 178. This very rare coin is part of the last official series minted by Augustus in Alexandria in the years of his reign from 38 to 42 (08/09 - 12/13 AD), described by RPC I as the "sixth series", bearing the dates of issue corresponding to the years of the sovereign's reign, a feature that will be constant throughout the period of autonomous Alexandrian imperial coinage (30 BC - 298 AD). The portrait is of excellent courtly style and rather youthful despite the fact that Augustus was then 73 years old.
