Egypt. Alexandria. Maximinus I, 235-238. Tetradrachm (Billon, 25.2 mm, 12.13 g). Dated RY 1 (= 235). ΑΥΤΟ ΜΑΞΙΜΙΝΟϹ ΕΥϹ ϹΕΒ Laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust right. Rev. Zeus seated left on throne, holding phiale and scepter; at his feet to left, eagle standing left, head right; L A (date) to upper left. Dattari-Savio 4608. RPC VI online, 10667. Emmett 3306. Geissen -. Cf. SAVIO A. Tetradrammi alessandrini, pp. 127-129. Very Fine. Ex Naville Numismatics Ltd. 28, 22.01.2017, lot 375. The grimy Maximin I entered the scene after eliminating the last Severans. Of semi-Barbarian origins, he was a gigantic and valiant military leader, continuously engaged on various war fronts, so much so that he never came to Rome nor went to Alexandria. The portrait on the obverse of the tetradrachm well expresses the military character of the person already from his first months of reign in 235 AD.
