Egypt. Alexandria. Commodus, 177-192. Tetradrachm (Billon, 25.7 mm, 12.16 g). Dated RY 28 of Marcus Aurelius (= 187/188). Μ Α ΚΟΜ ΑΝ[Τω] ϹΕΒ ΕΥϹΕΒ Laureate head right. Rev. Hermanubis standing right, holding palm frond and caduceus; at his feet to left, jackal standing left, head right; K/L H (date) across field. Geissen 2229. Dattari-Savio 3866. RPC IV.4. 3516.44 (this coin cited). Emmett 2545.28. Toned, metal flaw on reverse, some smoothing on reverse, otherwise, Good Very Fine. Ex Roma Numismatics E A 56, 18.04.2019, lot 555. A well-preserved tetradrachm with skilful ancient silvering that highlights the images on both sides of the coin, in particular the excellent laureate head of Commodus, whose hair curls and beard hair can be counted.
