Head of Arethousa left, hair in sakkos adorned with a star, wearing single-pendant earring and necklace; pellet to right. Rev. Herakles kneeling right, strangling the Nemean Lion. This Syracusan 100 litrai, or double dekadrachms, dating circa 405 BC, reflects a pivotal period in Syracuse's history under Dionysios. Following the repulsion of an Athenian invasion, Syracuse faced and defeated a Carthaginian incursion, preserving its sovereignty. Crafted with exceptional artistry, the coin features the serene visage of Arethusa on the obverse, reminiscent of the renowned Euainetos' style, while the reverse depicts Herakles' heroic struggle against the Nemean lion.
