Genoa. Republic (1139-1339). BI Denaro. D/ Patent cross. R/ Genoese gateway. CNI 1/69; MIR (Piem. Sard. Lig. Cors.) 16. BI. 0.73 g. 16.00 mm. Good VF. Thanks to hoards many are the evidences that these coins have been circulated in Latin East. Genoa has always had a relationship with east territories, especially in the black sea but this became more relevant at the end of the XIV and the beginning of the XV century. This italian issue, together with the denarii of Lucca have had a great popularity because of their good alloy that made these coins accepted worldwide. Very interesting to note is the depiction of the reverse which will be similarly used also for Cypriot coins during the Lusignan reign.
