SALINAS, Antonino. LE MONETE DELLE ANTICHE CITTA’ DI SICILIA. DESCRITTE E ILLUSTRATE DA ANTONINO SALINAS. PROFESSORE DI ARCHEOLOGIA NELLA REALE UNIVERSITA’ DI PALERMO. Reprint of Bologna 1971 of the first edition of Palermo, 1867-1922. 4°. xx, 79 pages, 34 plates. Green fulll cloth binding with gilt titles on the spine. As new. Clain-Stefanelly 2203. Antonino Salinas published the preface to this work up to page 16 and the illustrative text up to page 52 together with 15 copperplates. Upon his death in 1914, the work was unfinished and Salinas bequeathed his coins to the National Museum in Palermo in addition to what had already been prepared for the book. A committee was set up to continue the printing under the direction of Ettore Gabrici, Salinas' successor to the chair of the University of Palermo. The preface was completed and the missing pages 53 to 79 as well as plates XVI to XXXIV were published. Unfortunately, six plates could not be completed, so this rare work lacks number XX, which was supposed to include the bronze from Catania, XXV on the bronze from Gela, XXVII on the coins from Enna, and XXIX, XXX and XXXI on the coins from Hippana, Hibla Magna, Jaetta and Lentini.gr. 764
