Head of horse right; behind, sickle; below, ROMA. Cr. 25/1; HN Italy 297; RRSC E 7. 6.39 g. 20 mm. RR. Very rare and superb. Well centred and pleasantly toned. About EF. The symbol sickle is writted, in Greek, zankle, which was the Greek name of Messana. This coinage might refer to the triumph of M. Valerius Maximus Messalla of 263 BC against Hieron and the Carthaginians and in support of the Mamertini. The surname Messalla refers to this fact. (From RRSC Vol 1).
