Non-RRC 113 star-before. AE Quadrans, c. 100-25(?) BC. Obv. Head of Hercules right, wearing lion's skin; behind, three pellets. Rev. ROMA. Prow right; before, eight rayed star; below, three pellets. Cr. -. AE. 3.83 g. 18.00 mm. RR. Very rare and nice example. VF. This quadrans belongs to unofficial small change issue. Evidence of weight indicates that these unofficial and later coins were struck on a standard typically a third lower than any other RRC 113 or 196 denomination. For the reattribution of these coins see R. SCHAEFER and A. McCABE, A Fresh Look at Roman Republican Star Bronzes, RRC 113 and 196, in The Numismatic Chronicle (1966-)
