Rare

Very rare type on silver. The type was struck to commemorate the military victory achieved by the emperor over the Chatti in AD 83. With this success Domitian was able to acquire territories beyond the Rhine, which became part of Germania Superior (Upper Germany). As this coin suggests, he obtained the title "Germanicus" and celebrated his triumph in Rome, the highest honor to which a military general aspired, during which the victor paraded through the city on a quadriga headed for the temple of Jupiter on the Capitol. In spite of the derision of his detractors, who spoke of a futile campaign, Domitian succeeded with this operation in removing the Chatti from the frontiers and making the connections between the troops in the Rhine and Danube area more secure, with the construction of the first section of the Germanic-Rhaetian limes.
