Greek Italy. Lucania, Poseidonia-Paestum. Roman Rule. AE Semis, 90-44 BC. Obv. MINEIA M F . Head of Mineia right. Rev. P S / S C. Two-story building. HN Italy 1258; HGC 1 1221; Crawford, Paestum 38. 3.37 g. 16 mm. Minor roughness. Among the finest specimens offered for sale. About EF. This coin presents a rare instance of a woman signing as the sponsor of a coinage issue. Mineia is also known from contemporary inscriptions as a major benefactor of the city of Paestum. The building, likely a public structure, may be another of her donations to the city, and it is even conceivable that the female head is a portrait of Mineia herself.
