Rare, lustrous and superb. Some surfaces bums on obverse and minor flatness on reverse, both insignificant and beside the border, otherwise. good EF/EF. Sold but not paid in our auction LX. Is our opinion – according to Banti, pace Babelon and Crawford – that in this series the obverse symbol plectrum (often interpreted, in error, as “a flower”) identifies in any case the Musa Erato, while only the symbol tortoise identifies the Musa Terpsichore. Inexplicably this type, correctly interpreted by Admiral William Smith already in 19th century (Descriptive Catalogue of a Cabinet of Roman Family Coins Belonging to the Duke of Northumberland, London 1856) was misdescribed (as representing Terpsichore) by Babelon and by later numismatic autorities, Crawford included. In 1980 A. Banti (CNR, vol. 7, pp. 187-210) was the first author – since W. Smith – to assign all the “plectrum coins” to Erato and only the “tortoise coins” to Terpsichore. For a more detailed explanation of the question, see the excellent essay of Phillip Davis “Erato or Terpsichore; A Reassessment” in Fides, The American Numismatic Society, New York 2015. Davis admirably says : “The muddle of Erato and Terpsichore dies very hard. No pun intended.” Erato was the Muse of Erotic Poetry.

Eryx and its temple complex, the Greek historian Polybius of Megalopolis writes: On its summit, which is flat, stands the temple of Venus Erycina, which is indisputably the first in wealth and general magnificence of all the Sicilian holy places. The city extends along the hill under the actual summit, the ascent to it being very long and steep on all sides. (World History, 1.55).

Superb and full weight example. Metal flaw on reverse, otherwise. good EF/EF. The moneyer's ancestor, L. Cassius Longinus Ravilla, proposed a new method of jury voting, a form of 'secret ballot', in 137 BC. Known as the Lex Cassia Tabellaria, it provided that in most court cases tried by jury, jurors could mark their verdict on a small tablet and drop it into a basket to be counted by a court official. The exception was cases of treason, where a voice vote or show of hands was required. The practice also extended to voting on laws proposed in the Comitia Tributa and Concilium Plebis, the people's assemblies. Combined with the obverse, this reverse alludes to the Trial of the Vestal Virgins of 113 which set up the special commission, presided over by Ravilla, of two of the three delinquent Virgins - Licinia and Marcia (Aemilia was found guilty during the first trial in 115 BC).

Junius Brutus, one of the leaders in the conspiracy that assassinated Julius Caesar in 44 BC. The types are records of his ancestry. Lucius Junius Brutus was a semilegendary figure, held to have ousted the despotic Etruscan king Lucius Tarquinius Superbus from Rome in 509 BC and then to have founded the Roman Republic. Gaius Servilius Ahala was celebrated in Roman tradition as a hero who freed his country from the threat of tyranny by killing Sp. Maelius in 439 BC.

Belonging to the series of Julius Caesar's rarest denarii, this issue is not unanimously accepted when it was minted and during which military campaign. The figure on the obverse has been variously interpreted as Pietas or as Clementia, while the reverse distinctly evokes the military setting in which this series was minted, but without precise references placing it in time and space.

Oxidations and scratch on obverse. About EF. This denarius is the most remarkable example of Caesar's vision for his future as an autocrat: there is not the slightest hint of the imagery commonly associated with Greek rulers, such as the diadem or the mention of the word 'rex.' Instead, Caesar chooses the seemingly innocuous title of 'parens patriae' (father of the fatherland), a title granted to him when he was appointed dictator perpetuus (dictator for life). Contrary to common misconception, Caesar is not wearing a laurel wreath, but a crown made of small golden leaves, as clearly seen on this specimen. This was the crown worn by Jupiter Capitolinus and by the dictator during his triumphal procession. Caesar's head is veiled to signify his role as Pontifex Maximus. For the same reason, we also find the symbols of the two most important priestly colleges: on the left, the apex, a pointed leather cap worn by the Flamines during their duties, and on the right, the lituus, the staff used by Augurs responsible for interpreting bird omens in Rome. However, despite Caesar’s careful strategies, strong opposition grew among the Senators, who foresaw their diminishing influence and power. Caesar's assassination was only a matter of time.

Minted in the immediate aftermath of the assassination of Julius Caesar by conspirators led by Brutus and Cassius, this issue very shortly precedes the expedition to Asia Minor. The obverse depicts Marcus Antonius with a short beard and on the reverse the personification of Mars, god of war.

Marcus Junius Brutus, known for his role in Julius Caesar's assassination, was a key figure in the late Roman Republic. He opposed Caesar's dictatorship, believing in the restoration of the Republic. Lentulus Spinther, a senator and supporter of Pompeus, was initially aligned with Caesar’s enemies but later sought reconciliation with Caesar after his defeat in the civil war. Both men embodied the complex allegiances of Rome’s turbulent political climate, though Brutus' legacy as a 'liberator' sharply contrasts with Spinther's pragmatic shifts in loyalty.

Historically important example, fully readable and with pleasant portraits. Two small banker's marks. VF. Through Cleopatra, Egypt became entangled in the chaotic political struggles of the Roman civil war, in which Julius Caesar, Marcus Antonius, and Octavian fought to control Egypt’s vast wealth of grain and gold. This eventually resulted in the end of Egypt as a sovereign nation and the fall of the Ptolemaic dynasty. This coin was struck after Antonius and Cleopatra had married and joined forces to fight Octavian. A year later, in 31 BC, Octavian would defeat the couple at the Battle of Actium, and the ruling dynasty that began with Ptolemy I would come to an end with Cleopatra’s death in 30 BC.
