Dramatic Overstrike


Octavian with Divos Iulius. AE Sestertius or Dupondius. Southern Italian(?) mint, c. 38 BC; overstruck on AE As, Narbo mint, c. 40 BC. Obv. Bare head of Octavian right, wearing slight beard; [CAESAR downward to right]; DIVI • F downward to left. Rev. Caesar right; DIVOS downward to right; [IVLIVS downward to left]. Cr. 535/1; RPC I 620; for undertype: RPC I 518 (Narbo) and SNG Cop. 705-6 (uncertain). Impressive and exciting overstrike that give shape to a fantastic double headed 'gryllos' with the features of Caesar and Octavian. Dark green, almost black patina. VF/Good VF.
