Bold Balbinus
Balbinus (238 AD). AR Antoninianus. Rome mint. 2nd emission. Obv. IMP CAES D CAEL BALBINVS AVG. Radiate, draped and cuirassed bust right. Rev. FIDES MVTVA AVGG. Clasped right hands. RIC IV 11. 4.69 g. 24.00 mm. R. Light golden toning, underlying luster. EF. Although struck during the chaotic Year of the Six Emperors, this silver antoninianus bears an outstanding portrait of the plump, self-satisfied Balbinus. The reverse disingenuously shows his right hand clasped with that of his partner Pupienus, also chosen by the Roman Senate, along with the legend celebrating “the mutual faithfulness of the emperors.” In reality they could not stand one another and this antipathy made sure their joint reign was a brief one.
