Lot # 114
Greek Italy. Southern Lucania, Sybaris. AR Nomos, c. 550-510 BC. Obv. Bull standing left, with head reverted; above MV. Rev. The same type incuse right. HN Italy 1729; HGC 1 1231. AR. 8.25 g. 29.50 mm. RRR. Of the greatest rarity. Apparently unpublished and never offered in public sale. Superb example, brilliant and lightly toned. EF. This issue with no reverted ethnic MV (M with late elongated aspect ratio) above bull, probably belongs to the transition period between the first issues with archaic ethnic above bull and the last, with ethnic in exergue and characterized by a rendering of characters in later style, similar to our example.
