The bronze coinage of the Latin colony of Cosa in Etruria and its parallel issue at Rome (Cr. 17/1a-i) have since the 19th century been termed litrae and half-litrae, Etruscan gold and silver denominations with marks of value being described as multiples of litrae. This state of affairs has lead to confusion for it had no justification in the observed behaviour of the 3rd century central Italian economy. The ancient use of the word litra, a Greek term for a Sicilian bronze unit, in the context of a purely Romano-Etruscan coinage without any contemporary parallel in Italy, seems unlikely and certainly not of contemporary usage. It may be better to describe this interesting military issue in Roman weight terms and monetary units with their customary nomenclature. From c. 270-240 BC the weight standard of the Romans fluctuated at around 270 g. (10 unciae) indicating ± 6.75 grams as the theoretical weight of the quartuncia, comfortably accommodating the Rome and Cosa bronzes which range between about 5 and 8 grams. (Triton V, 3 note).

The city of Aquinum was founded by the Volsci, but little is known of its history. During the Punic War (218-201) between Rome and Carthage, Atella (Aderl in Oscan) had supported Hannibal. Then Atella was recaptured by the Roman proconsul Q. Fulvius Flaccus, in 211 BC, and suffered a terrible punishment for its disloyalty. In the early phase of the Second Punic War, Atella struck a bronze coinage of four denomination; the Quadrunx type derived from contemporary Roman Quadrigatus.

The oath scene is derived from Capua's Biunx, which in turn draws inspiration from Roman gold Staters and Hemistaters struck around 216 BC. The oath scene on Roman model involves three soldiers, representing the alliances between Rome and other Italic peoples, but here the number of participants is reduced to two, perhaps to indicate the alliance between the city and Hannibal .

Haeberlin. Roman mythological tradition attributed the foundation of Capua (Capu in Oscan) to Capys, a descendant of the Trojan hero, Aeneas. However, the historical city seems to have been an Etruscan settlement with origins extending back into the Villanovian culture period (c. 1100-700 BC). At the outbreak of the Second Punic War (218-201 BC) between Roma and Carthage, Capua was regarded in Italy as a city second only to Rome in terms of wealth and influence. When the Romans were brought low by the victory of Hannibal at the Battle of Cannae (216 BC), the Campanians sent emissaries to Rome to seek confirmation of Capua's importance, arguing that one of the annual consuls should come from the city. The Romans would not accept the Campanian request. In response the gates of Capua were opened to welcome the Carthaginian army. Capua served as Hannibal's winter quarters until 211 BC, when the city was besieged and captured by the Roman proconsul Q. Fulvius Flaccus. This Quincunx belongs to the first Capua's series, based on an As of c. 66 gr.

The reverse depiction of Telephos suckled by the hind directly responds to the Roman image of Romulus and Remus suckled by the wolf. This type clearly shows that has not been borrowed by the coinage of Capua in deference to Roman leadership, but as a challenge. The aim is to promote Capua as an alternate Rome, a Campanian Rome that with Carthaginian help could supersede the city on the Tiber. Of the greatest rarity, the fourth known example (SNG Milano 22 ; SNG Paris 325; Private collection = ex coll. Borghesi) and the second in private hands . A superb coin, sharply struck on a slightly irregular and compact flan. Obverse a little off centre, lovely reddish brown surfaces with dark spots. Good VF. The attribution of these rare coins to the Peligni by G. Pansa ('Le monete dei Peligni', RIN 19 (1906), pp.159-78) is based partly on the form of the legend and partly on the obverse types, thought to be a reference to snakes venerated by the Marsi and Paeligni. L. Sambon ('Recherche', pp. 64-5) suggested an attribution to the mythical Palatium near Reate (...). The coinage has also been attributed to Pallanum (D.Priori ,'Le monete di Pallano...', BCNN 47, 1962, pp.3-8). None of the arguments is plausible, and the pieces may indeed be Roman semunciae of the late second century BC. (HN Italy, p.75).
