Greek Italy. Lucania, Poseidonia-Paestum. AR Nomos, c. 530-500 BC. Obv. ΠΟΣ (retrograde). Poseidon, bearded, nude but for chlamys draped over his arms, standing right, preparing to cast trident held aloft in right hand, left arm extended. Rev. ΠΟΣ (retrograde). The same type incuse left, trident and ethnic in relief. HN Italy 1107; SNG ANS 615 (same obv. die); SNG München 5 (same obv. die); Gorini 5. AR. 7.46 g. 28.00 mm. RR. Very rare. An exceptionally fine example, of superb early Archaic style. Perfectly centered and finely detailed. Exceptional metal quality, enchanting cabinet tone with warm hues over lustrous surfaces. EF.
