Aistulfus, king of the Langobards, conquered Ravenna in the spring or summer of 751. He brought a revolutionary innovation in numismatics, issuing coins minted in Ravenna that, unique in their kind in the Longobard series in northern Italy, completely borrow the bizantine model and no longer only as an archetype of inspiration. In Ravenna, Aistulfus minted coins in three denominals; solidus, tremissis and follis, in a period of time presumably from 751 to 755.
