Leo Biaggi de Blasys (1906-1979) was a Swiss sugar magnate and sportsman whose fascination with ancient Rome led to the creation of one of the world’s greatest collections of Roman gold coins. Born in Genoa to a Swiss-Italian diplomat and a French mother, he became active in the Red Cross after 1943 and, with his father, he repeatedly helped Jews in Italy escape persecution in the later years of World War II. He was also alleged to have knowingly aided in the escape of high-ranking Nazis, a notion dismissed by his friends and relations. In 1961, he received the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic for his services. His collection focused on Roman gold from the Republic to late Empire, ultimately comprising over 2,000 specimens. The gold collection was purchased en bloc by Bank Leu (Zurich) in 1978, and slowly sold off to collectors over the next few decades. More than 500 ex-Biaggi coins were sold by Numismatica Ars Classica in their Auction 49 in 2008. The Biaggi pedigree remains highly prized among collectors of Roman gold. A brilliant example, lightly toned. Good VF/VF. When Valerian I was captured by the Sasanian king Shapur I in the spring or summer of 260 the Roman east was shattered. Not only had their emperor been subjected to the unthinkable, but Shapur followed up with an invasion of Syria, sacking Antioch more completely than it had been seven years earlier, when Uranius Antoninus revolted. Though Valerian’s son Gallienus was still the legitimate emperor, he was bogged down defending Europe from a host of calamities. In that sense we may see the uprising of Macrianus and Quietus as less of a revolt than a response to dire circumstances. The eastern legions sparked a revolt at Antioch in September, turning to the praetorian prefect Callistus (nicknamed Ballista, meaning ‘catapult’) and the quartermaster-general Macrianus Senior for leadership. Though neither man assumed the purple himself, they proposed Macrianus’ two sons, Macrianus and Quietus, as emperor candidates. The revolt was well received throughout the Eastern provinces and Egypt, for Macrianus Senior controlled of Valerian’s treasury and Callistus had led the Roman legions to a follow-up victory over the Persians. Gallienus entrusted his subordinates with the task of deposing Macrianus and Quietus some six months after their revolt had begun, which caused the rebels to divide their forces; Callistus and Quietus remained in the East while father and son Macrianus led an army westward, seemingly in hopes of overthrowing Gallienus. In the spring of 261 the Macriani were defeated in Illyricum by one of Gallienus’ commanders, Aureolus or Domitianus. In the East, Callistus and Quietus held out for eight months, spending their final days at Emesa, where the citizens murdered them when the city was besieged by Odaenathus, the king of Palmyra and Gallienus’ vice-regent in Asia Minor (NAC 34, 62).

From the Marc Poncin Collection. Ex NAC O (13 May 2004), lot 2114 (where it realized CHF 5600). History records little of Eugenius, a professor of Latin and rhetoric who gave up teaching to occupy the throne of the Western Roman Empire for two years and a few days. The very fact that he was not qualified to be emperor made him the perfect candidate, for the Frankish general Arbogast wanted him as a puppet. It was a perfect follow-up to his murder of Valentinian II – the young Western emperor whom Theodosius had entrusted to Arbogast’s regency. Afterwards the throne remained vacant for three months as Arbogast sought a replacement. Although only Theodosius I, the senior reigning emperor in the East, had the constitutional right to appoint the next emperor in the west, this did not deter Arbogast, who was firmly in control of the West. The elevation of Eugenius was of value to Arbogast on some level, for the old professor was not prone to religious fanaticism, and (as his bearded effigy attests) he was tolerant of pagans. When the army backing Eugenius seized Italy in 393, Theodosius responded with a campaign of his own, and routed them in September, 394. In the aftermath Eugenius was executed and the former Master of Infantry, Arbogast, was driven to flight and soon took his own life. During the six months between the defeat of Eugenius and Theodosius’ natural death in January of 395, he remained in Milan and from there ruled over a united empire. Unity occured on only two occasions after the empire had been divided by Valentinian I and Valens in 364, both of which were equally as brief and transient. With the death of Theodosius the temporary unity of east and west ceased, and the empires entered a period of great unrest under his two incompetent sons, Arcadius and Honorius, who promptly divided the empire between themselves. Much like the later empress Theodora, Eudoxia has been the subject of a largely negative press. Zosimus (Historia nova), writing almost a century after her death, records that it was widely claimed that her fourth child, the only son and heir, Theodosius II, had been fathered by one of her husband's courtiers, John; and himself goes on to describe her as 'abnormally willful', stating that she ultimately served the insatiable desires of the palace eunuchs and the women who surrounded her, by whom, he alleges, she was controlled. In a continuation of the use of excessively emotive terms he describes her attitude towards the bishop of Constantinople at that time, John Chrysostom, as one of 'hatred'. Philostorgius, who lived in Constantinople throughout Arcadius' reign, is slightly more positive in that he states that 'the woman was not a dullard like her husband' and that 'she possessed no small degree of barbarian arrogance'. Ps-Martyrius, also a direct contemporary, in his funeral oration on John Chrysostom alludes to her as a second Jezebel, a captive of the devil 'clothed in the insatiable power of greed and considerable wickedness'. The overwhelming image of the empress as, at best, emotionally volatile is not helped by Socrates' allegation that, on hearing that Eudoxia was machinating to convoke a second synod against him, John Chrysostom preached a notorious sermon which began: 'Again Herodias rages…again she dances, again she seeks to have the head of John on a plate'. Aelia Eudocia started life as Athenais, a legendary beauty born in Antioch to a prominent Pagan professor of rhetoric. Having absorbed Greek philosophy from childhood, she became an accomplished poet, prose writer and orator in her own right. When her father died, her two brothers seized control of his estate and cut her out of almost any inheritance. She traveled to Constantinople in AD 420 to seek redress from the Emperor Theodosius II. It so happened the scholarly young emperor was in the market for a wife and he was immediately smitten with Athenais. His sister, Pulcheria, insisted that she convert to Christianity before any marriage, terms that she readily accepted, taking the name Eudocia upon her conversion. The new Empress immediately became an advocate for universal education and tolerance, particularly toward Jews and other persecuted sects. She also sought to blend Classical Hellenism and Christianity. This placed her at odds with many powerful interests, including Pulcheria, who began to denigrate the sincerity of her conversion. To prove her devotion, Eudocia made a pilgrimage to the Holy Land in AD 438, but soon after returning she was accused of adultery and banished from the court. Theodosius still had affection for her, however, and the terms were not severe. She was able to retire to Jerusalem where she continued her writing and charitable work until her death in AD 460. Aelia Pulcheria, the daughter, sister and wife to three different East Roman emperors, played a critical role in maintaining the stability of the Eastern Roman regime, during the tumultuous early to mid-fifth century AD. Born circa AD 398 to Arcadius and Aelia Eudoxia, she had a far more dominating personality than her timid younger brother, Theodosius II. When Arcadius died in AD 408 and Theodosius ascended the throne, at the age of seven, Pulcheria took upon herself the role of her brother's protector. In AD 414, she came of age and the Senate declared her Augusta, or Empress, whereupon she took over the regency herself. She declared her intent to remain a virgin (possibly to avoid a political marriage), and took her brother's education into her own hands, seeing to it he learned how to look, act, and perform rituals like an emperor; however he lacked backbone, which she had to provide to keep the Theodosian regime in undisputed power. Under her guidance, the Eastern Roman Empire successfully intervened in the West and installed her nephew, Valentinian III, on the throne (AD 424-425), while to the East, a brief war against Persia was successfully prosecuted (AD 421). When Theodosius was killed in a riding accident, in AD 450, Pulcheria briefly ruled as sole empress before bowing to demands that she marry and thus chose a suitable man to rule as Augustus. She wisely chose the lowborn but capable Marcian, who proved to be the strong, even-handed ruler the Empire needed. The year following her marriage, Pulcheria was instrumental in summoning the Fourth Ecumenical Council at Chalcedon, which established the basic principles of teaching the Eastern Orthodox Church. Pulcheria died in AD 453, having kept her vows of virginity and defense of her Imperial dynasty for a half-century and left all of her possessions to the poor. (Heritage 3039, 2021, 31146 note).

An outstanding example, in excellent condition for issue, sharply struck and well centred on unusually regular flan. Light green patina. VF. Julius Valerius Majorian owned his name to his maternal grandfather, who had been magister militum in Illyricum in the 370s. He had himself served with distinction under Aetius, and in 455 he was considered a possible successor of Valentinian III. Presumably, when he and Ricimer deposed Avitus in October 456, it was intended that he should succeed him, but according to Sidonius Apollinaris, who knew him personally, he was reluctant to assume the burden, and an interregnum of six months followed during which he and Ricimer were in fact masters of the West but the Emperors were nominally Marcian and, after January 457, Leo. Even after he had been proclaimed emperor by the army outside Rome on 1st April 457, he continued to call himself no more than magister militum, and he was not proclaimed at Ravenna until 28 December 457. Just as Avitus had not been acceptable in Italy, so Majorian was not acceptable in Gaul. In 458 he led an army of German mercenaries into the Rhone valley, made himself master of Lyon, which had accepted a Burgundian garrison, and having defeated the Visigoths outside Arles, he compelled them to come to terms. But his Gallic successes in 458/9 were followed by misfortunes in Spain in 460/1. Two naval expeditions planned against Gaiseric met with disaster, and he was forced to return to Italy with no accomplishment to his credit. Such successes as he had had, however, aroused the suspicions of Ricimer: Majorian, who had deserved better things, was seized by treachery at Tortona on 2 August, deposed, and beheaded five days later. AE4 were struck under Majorian at Milan, Ravenna and Rome […] The coins of all three mints are larger and substantially heavier than any Western bronze coins had been since the reign of Honorius. Lacam (1988, 220) has suggested that these unusually high weights are to be explained by Ricimer's need for betterc coin to offer Gundobald's mercenaries when preparing for his campaign against the Vandals, but it is difficult to immagine any troops being satisfied with such miserable scraps of metal. RIC X 2812; Depeyrot 59/5. AV. 4.43 g. 20.00 mm. RR. A superb example of this very rare and historically important issue. EF. After the death of Libius Severus, the western half of the Roman Empire was without an emperor for over a year. The power was wielded de facto by Ricimer, and Leo was either too busy or did not feel there was a need to nominate an emperor. Matters changed, however, probably as a result of a Vandal raid into Greece, and Leo designated Procopius Anthemius emperor of the western provinces to deal with the Vandal menace issuing from Africa under their king, Gaiseric. The expedition against Gaiseric was a total failure from the start due to the incompetence of the joint commander from the East, Leo's brother-in-law Basiliscus. With the failure to defeat the Vandals and anti-Greek feelings in Rome, Anthemius was not well liked and eventually Olybrius, with the aid of Ricimer, usurped power. Anthemius was killed by the barbarian soldier Gundobald as he attempted to flee Rome. (CNG 73,1029 note). The gold coinage of Anthemius reflects his origins by following the convention for frontal portraiture found on East Roman and later Byzantine coins. The reverse of this incredible Rome-mint gold solidus celebrates the supposed unity of East and West empires by showing Anthemius and Leo together supporting a long cross, on which rests, according to the legend, the 'Health of the Republic.' RIC X 3220; Lacam 78. AV. 1.44 g. 14.00 mm. RR. Brilliant and superb, underlying luster. EF. Nepos was a powerful and well-connected figure, virtually the hereditary ruler of Dalmatia, and married to a relative of Verina, empress of Leo I. No evidence exists to enable his personal qualities to be assessed. His seizure of the western throne appears to have had the blessing of Zeno, but he never received more than diplomatic support from the East. His recognition in Italy was divided into two periods by the usurpation of Romulus followed probably by several months during which Odovacar acknowledged only the eastern emperor. His acceptance as nominal emperor was evidently conditional on his remaining in Dalmatia, but is implicit in the 'vengeance' for his murder exacted by Odovacar in 481. Presumably Italy was to be governed in his name 'until he himself should come', the later arrangement between Theoderic and Zeno (Anonymus Valesianus, 49). (RIC X, p. 204).

Rare and in exceptional condition for issue. Outstanding portrait, dark green patina. About EF. The Vandals first occupied Sardinia in 456, but only controlled the majority of the island by 474. Under new rule, the administrative system did not change much, although for some people to keep their land, they needed to pay lump sums. In 433, while the Vandal Kingdom was falling and Sardinia gained a great amount of autonomy, the governor of the island, Godas, declared himself King. Even so, the Vandal king, Gelimer (530-534), did not support Godas. He sent his brother to the island, who executed Godas the same year Godas declared himself king. The island remained under Vandal control until 534, when the Vandal Kingdom dismantled and the island went to the Byzantines. (Wikidata: Q3974089).

RRR. Very rare. Slightly bent flan and minor scratch on left reverse field. VF. The western solidi struck in the name of Zeno are of problematic attribution. At the inception of Zeno's second reign, Odovacar controlled Italy, and ostensibly struck coinage there in the name of Zeno. By 488 AD, though, relations between Zeno and Odovacar had deteriorated, and according to the Excerpta Valesiana (11.49), Zeno commanded Theoderic to take Italy from Odovacar. Metlich (COI) argues that the western solidi in Zeno's name were probably issued by Odovacar at Rome, but notes the possibility of some also belonging to Theoderic. Kent (RIC, p. 215) thought that they were struck by both Odovacar and Theoderic, and the differentiation was determined by mint and date of issue, but the distinction was not possible in most cases. For this particular type, however, Lacam notes that the slender portrait, with its high crest, and the outline of the cross on the reverse are the signature characteristics of the northern mints under Theoderic's control. However, Lacam also notes that P-ERP in the obverse legend is a convention of the Rome mint at this time, and the G at the end of the reverse legend appears to be a modification of the traditional G• of Odovacar's issues. Based on these characteristics, Lacam concludes that the issue was struck by Theoderic at a mint in the vicinity of Rome while campaigning against Odovacar. These characteristics could also lead to a conclusion that this is the first issue of Theoderic at Rome following his capture of the city from Odovacar. The legends are a natural progression from those of Odovacar, and the 'northern' mint style could be the result of a transfer of die engravers to Rome from Theoderic's previous mints. The fact that Zeno was dead by the time of Rome's fall to Theoderic (AD 293) led Lacam to conclude that the issue was earlier while Theoderic was on campaign. Nonetheless, it would not be unusual for an issue of this period to be struck in the name of a deceased emperor. Regardless of which theory is correct this is certainly a historically significant issue. The Ostrogoths were one of a number of Germanic tribes that ravaged the Roman Empire while under the domination of the Huns. After the Hunnic kingdom fell in AD 454, the Ostrogoths were settled in northern Pannonia as foederati. In AD 488, the emperor Zeno called on the Ostrogothic king, Theoderic, to overthrow Odovacar, who had been ruling Italy for the emperor, but had recently become an opponent. Theoderic complied, and hostilities lasted until Odovacar was finally defeated in AD 493. Theoderic was to rule Italy until the emperor arrived, but Zeno died before this occurred. As a result, the Ostrogoths established their own kingdom in Italy, under the authority of the emperor in Constantinople. Over the first thirty years, under Theoderic and then his grandson, Athalaric, Italy experienced a period of relative tranquility. The prosperity of the kingdom was shattered in AD 535, when the Byzantine emperor Justinian I sent his general Belisarius to return Italy to ‘Roman’ rule. Although Belisarius was on the brink of accomplishing this goal, Justinian was forced to recall him to lead the imperial forces against the Persians in the east. Afterward, a quick succession of inept kings followed, until Baduila ascended the throne in AD 541. A popular king, he restored most of Italy to the Ostrogoths and sparked a revival of their fortunes, but was eventually killed in action against the Byzantines at Busta Gallorum in AD 552. His successor, Theia, died that same year, and only a few independent pockets of Ostrogothic resistance held out until the last stronghold was taken in AD 562. (CNG 72, 2006, 2213 note).

While the Ostrogoths were technically subordinates of the Byzantine emperor, for which reason they struck coinage in his name, they were, in reality, the de facto rulers of the Italian peninsula. After the death of Alboin's successor (574 or 575) the Rule of the Dukes was an interregnum in the Lombard Kingdom (574/5–584/5) during which Italy was ruled by the Lombard dukes of the old Roman provinces and urban centres. Faroald I (died 591 or 592) was the first Duke of Spoleto, which he established during the decade of interregnum. He led the Lombards into the centre of the Italian Peninsula while Zotto led them into the south. In 579 Faroald sacked Classis, the harbour of Ravenna. Between 584 and 588, Classis was retaken by Droctulf.

The last of the Lombard kings to rule in Italy, Desiderius was not a member of the royal family, but an important officer in the royal court. Upon the death of his predecessor, Aistulf, Desiderius was appointed king. Like his predecessors, Desiderius hoped to expand Lombardic power in Italy, but this policy led to conflict with the papacy and the southern Italian dukedoms, including Benevento and Spoleto, all of whom had been moving closer to the Carolingian sphere of influence. Desiderius was able to exercise control over the southern dukedoms. His attempt to intervene in papal affairs was less successful; his appointee, the Antipope Philip reigned for only a single day. And to achieve a rapprochement with the Carolingians, Desiderius gave his daughter, Desiderata, in marriage to Charlemagne. The marriage lasted only briefly and Desiderata was soon returned to her father. This, combined with Desiderius’ support of Gerberga, the widow of Charlemagne’s brother, Carloman I, resulted in a war between the Carolingians and the Lombards. Desiderius was eventually defeated and forced to retire to a monastery where he died.

Gregory (died 739/740) was a nephew of Liutprand , who appointed him Duke of Beneventum in 732 or thereabouts after removing both the usurper Audelais and the minor Gisulf II. He was married to Giselperga.

His reign was characterised by the continuous wars with the Saracens and the Duchies of Naples, Sorrento and Amalfi, which he occupied in 838, moving some of its inhabitants to Salerno. Sicard was also a builder, having embellished Beneventum especially with churches. He was killed by a revolt of the Amalfitans, instigated by Radelchis treasurer of the Principality, which paved the way for a period of dissension and the definite division from Salerno.
