A Palm Branch, Not a Feather
Reverse Palm Branch series. AR Denarius, uncertain mint, 202 BC. Obv. Helmeted head of Roma right; behind, X. Rev. Luna in biga right; below, feather (or palm branch?); in linear frame, ROMA. Cr. 163/1. RRSC B141. 3.63 g. 19 mm. Well centred and good. Minor earthy deposits. Good VF. The symbol in this series is commonly referred to as a feather. However, this interpretation is debatable. A recent study by Debernardi (RRSC Vol. 1) reexamines this symbol, proposing it to be a palm branch instead. The palm branch could be considered a symbol of victory, possibly used on these final issues dated to the end of the Second Punic War.
