Following the suppression of the Jesuit College in Vienna, the adjoining numismatic cabinet was incorporated into the imperial collection. The former curator, Abbot Eckhel, moved in with the coins and was appointed curator of ancient coins of the Imperial Coin Cabinet in March 1774.
Printed at the author's own expense, this first numismatic work is divided into two parts. The first part (pp. 1-162) is devoted to ancient coins minted in Europe, arranged clockwise from Hispania and Gaul to the Greek islands; the second part (pp. 165-318) concerns specimens minted in Asia and Africa, arranged clockwise from Pontus to Egypt; in addition, some indeterminate specimens are described, as well as some Republican, Imperial and Byzantine Roman.gr. 912
